Friday Feature: Swagged Up – College Boy Edition

Do you remember graduating from high school? Walking across the stage, shaking hands with your principal, and thinking about how you were going to show out when you made it to your respective college or university?

I remember back in 2009 when I first arrived at Spring Hill College. I remember the black body con dress that I wore to Risque’ the very first time, the gray jean and yellow tank I wore on the first day of class, and even the pin stripe shorts I wore to my very first NPHC Side Walk Step Show at the University of South Alabama.

Yall, I thought I was looking good. Thank God I have no pictures to document those disasters, because now that I think about it, it was not cute at all.

But kids these days are different. With all this social media, like the Infamous Instagram, these youngsters stay fresh. Let me introduce you to my FIRST Friday Feature: Christopher Williams

I was fortunate to meet Chris when I was teaching Vacation Bible School at my home church, Mt. Olive #2 Baptist Church this past week, and let me tell you, he is a jewel.

For some strange reason, I am constantly talking about my baby, Mrs. Clark Gent, and during one of our discussions while working on a craft, Chris informed me that he would like to grace the pages of my blog. If I’m not mistaken, the conversation went a little something like this…

Me: So you want to be on my fashion blog?…

Chris: I mean, you know, I stay swagged up… Ya feel me?…ย

Me: Umm… okay, I feel ya… lol… So you be swagged huh?…

Chris: Yea man… Stay swagged up, ya feel me… I’m gonna be swagged for ya tomorrow.. fa sho…

Me: Okay… lol… I got ya

Now this conversation happened on a Wednesday, and needless to say, on Thursday, he returned to my class… but he was surely not “swagged up”. He gave me some sap story about waking up late, and clothes being moved, and blah blah blah. But he assured me that on Friday he would would not disappoint me… and disappoint me, he did not.

Chris showed up, and he was swagged to the absolute max. He was wearing clothing (top and bottom) made by LRG (Lifted Research Group), and these clean, and I mean CLEAN Air Jordan 5 Retroย Grapes. Now, I’m usually not really into this style, but I must admit, I was really feeling this look. I think it was his vibe, confidence, and swagg that made me love it. As well as the fact that he was so knowledgeable about his clothing. My explanation about LRG couldn’t do it justice (something about saving plants and what not), but just know LRG is an amazing clothing company, and you should defiantly check it out.

I’m not sure if T-town is ready for Mr. Williams. In the fall, Chris will be beginning the next phase of his life. He will be attending Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa, AL where he will be majoring in Engineering; and after, he will be joining the United States Air Force. This guy is not only stylish, but he has brains as well. If I remember correctly, he received multiple awards for his skills in Math, and even served as a Boy State representative for Jackson High School. Ladies and gents, he is a force to be reckoned, so watch out for him… He is destined for greatness.

I am so elated that I was able to meet this young man, and I am so proud to see any young man (esp. African American) striving to be great. Chris, you are awesome, and Mrs. Clark Gent (also known as Ms. Holly) salutes you. Best wishes and be great…. ๐Ÿ™‚

Little Miss Sunshine…

Have you ever been awoken by the sunshine coming through your blinds?

It sounds poetic, but let me be the first to tell you, it is not cool. After a night of going out dancing, having drinks, and “turnin up”, the last thing you want is to wake up with the sun shining in your face. You will find yourself sweating, hot, and irritated, and that is not how you want to start your day.

Now do not get me wrong, I love the sunshine. I INjoy cleaning with the blinds open, and having the sunlight to flood my room. I think having the windows and blinds open inviting God’s natural light to come in helps to contribute to a positive atmosphere. I am so thankful that God wakes me up each day, and allows me to see the beauty of the world.

The beauty of nature: the trees, the flowers, brooks, streams, rivers, the clouds, the sky, etc., is amazing. Sometimes, I find myself engulfed in my thoughts about how beautiful the sky is at various times of the day, or admiring the shapes, colors, and placements of trees, and how they create the ultimate backdrop ย (like my graduation setting, Spring Hill College-Avenue of the Oaks).

Avenue of oaks

So when I woke up this past Thursday, with the natural light flooding my room, I knew what I wanted to wear for the day… my yellow hi-low dress from Charlotte Russe.

This dress is so light and easy to wear. I falls victim to the “hi-low” trend, but that does not bother me at all. Actually, I think I like that trend. When I think about it, I have many hi-low dresses… I happen to be wearing one as I’m writing this post.

The yellow dress made me feel good. It made me happy, and gave me a positive outlook on the day. The dress fit my curves well, and the color highlighted my chocolate skin. I paired it with a skinny yellow belt, a yellow statement necklace, complimenting yellow earrings (compliments of my sissy ig –> _fashionablybombb), and I completed the look with a pair of cognac sandals with the matching clutch.

All in all, it was a good day. Beautiful weather, simple, yet beautiful fashion, and even better company. My boo was in town, and he helped to keep the smile on my face. We have this little song we like to sing each other… let me share it with you, and maybe, you will smile too:

“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy, when skies are gray. You’ll never know dear, how much I love you. Please don’t take, my sunshine, away.” ๐Ÿ™‚

The Denim Doll…

Has a seasoned individual ever said to you, “Oh, that was the style back in my day”? Or, “Oh, that trend is just making a full circle… We wore that when I was your age…”?

I have heard that expression, or some variation of that for a hot moment now, and honestly, it makes me smile. I LOVE vintage. From the time I was younger, I would look at my mom in pictures and think, “Gosh, she is so stylish..”, and “Her purses and hair are so cool…”.

Now there were those brief moments when I thought, “What the hell is she wearing? Denim on denim? That ain’t cute”. I’ve made fun of my uncle and my sister for wearing what I called a “Jean Suit”, and I have swore on my Dooney that I would NEVER be caught wearing jean/denim top paired with a jean/denim bottom…

Well, I guess you should never say never, because just the other day, I went back on my word… I fell victim to this trend of denim on denim…IMG_2473

Now, I got mad love from strangers when I wore this little fit. From compliments about my entire fit, to compliments on individuals pieces, and even a compliment saying “you look fine in that to be your size” (now that’s an entirely different post lol). You see the thing about fashion is not dressing for others, but dressing for yourself, and making others look.

Not only did I wear this cute little cropped light denim top from Charlotte Russe, but I had on two other shades as well. The flip flops were a bit darker than the top (also from Charlotte Russe), and the jean shorts ($4.99 from Sears) were the darker or all three.ย I completed my ensemble with a white and gold necklace set (Charlotte Russe lol), my blue box purse (Goodwill), and a hit of orange on the lips. I’ve been working out a little, so I had no problem showing a little skin. ย Like I said before, when your comfortable with yourself, show OWT. I promise you, the world will listen.

IMG_2471IMG_2475 IMG_2474 IMG_2472

I’ve been on the hunt for my next piece of denim, and I can’t wait to wear this trend again. I even thought of a name for myself… The Denim Doll.. ๐Ÿ™‚ (fyi: Forever 21 and JCPenny have denim on deck… check them out and get on the denim train)

Teal Me Down Boo Boo…

My loves…. I must apologize…

It has been a long six days since my last post, and I must admit that I am a little ashamed. When I first developed Mrs. Clark Gent, it was my goal to post three, possibly four times a week. This past week, I failed, and by failed, I mean failed miserably.

But in the words of my boo, Dwayne “Lil Wayne” Carter… “We ain’t got no worries”. Mrs. Gent is back, and better than ever. My recent mini vacay gave me sometime to rest, and INjoy, and now, I have some great posts in store for you in the future. I’m so excited, I can barely wait…

A few of my readers informed me that they were “patiently waiting” for the next post, and that simple comment really made me feel special. To know that someone one has taken time out of their day to read something I wrote, is an amazing feeling. To know that someone looks forward to hearing what I have to say, and to know that they are actually interested in what I write gives me more motivation.

I love writing this blog. I love taking pictures and creating outfits and hearing your feedback. I love INspiring young women to be confident, and take risk. I think it’s about time we INspire each other… and I am starting by giving your Mrs. Clark Gent.

Each week, I choose a particular color to play around with, and this past Sunday, I chose teal. After waking up and having a rough morning, I was running late for worship service, and I was in need of something quick to toss on… Something that didn’t need to be ironed. I was already flustered, and the more items I pulled out of my closet, the more dissatisfied I became. As I was walking to the kitchen to get a glass of water, when a teal pair of heals caught my eye. The rest, was magic…

My advice for today is to be INspired. Wear your fitted dresses, shorter shorts, higher heels, bolder colors, and funky hairstyles. Wear them with elegance, grace, style, class, and confidence. Wear them to the mall, to the movies, the grocery store, on a date, or around the house. Be stylish and fashionable ALWAYS… You never know when I might be snapping a pic… ๐Ÿ™‚

Thick Girls Wear Stripes Too You Know…

Do you ever get tired of hearing about what you should and should not wear? What is and is not made for your skin tone or body type? What trends, styles, or patterns you should overlook because of your luscious curves?????

Well, I have had enough, and during my brief twenty-two years of living, I have learned a thing or two when it comes to the “dos and don’ts” of fashion.

You see, I have had the honor of being curvaceous my entire life, but it was in the past few years that I learned to really embrace, love, and INjoy the skin I’m in. If my mother never taught me anything (in actuality, she taught me everything I know), she taught me how to be confident in myself, and love me before loving someone else. So that is what I have done… big booty, crooked teeth, dark skin and all… I love, I am IN love, and I am confident with me.

IMG_2114ย So just in case one of my readers just happens to be thick, curvy, hefty, plump, luscious, voluptuous, full, etc., I just want you to know that you do not have to be tied down by the rules of fashion or its styles and trends. Once you learn to love yourself and be confident in you, forget the others and all their rules. Your path is your runway, and the daily spectators are your audience. Baby you and your curves rule this world… Just let them know the show has started…

IMG_1985So many times I have heard that bigger girls should not wear neon colors, pastel colors, bright colors, animal prints, mixed patterns, and of course, the infamous stripes. They may as well say we should not wear anything other than black… you know, to be thinner… because they have conditioned us to believe that black makes us look slimmer… lol. But I beg to differ. I think we should wear it all.

So too all of you who look at me funny when I wear a shorter dress to show off these luscious legs and thunder thighs… Or those of you who make the side comments when I walk out the dressing room with prints and patterns covering this work of art.. EAT YOUR HEART OUT… I do it, and I do it well.IMG_1974 IMG_1987

It doesn’t matter the color, nor does it matter the print. What matters is how you feel. Now I am not suggesting for us curvy women to go out and buy everything in our size, nor am I suggesting we conform to every trend and style… I am suggesting you to do what is right for you. Work with work you have, and be a lady while you do it.

Stripes are in this year, so don’t be afraid to wear them. If horizantal stripes make you feel wide, try something vertical or diagonal. If you are not yet comfortable with bright or bolder colors, go with the classy black and white (it’s in full effect right now). Whatever you decide, make it work for you. Fashion is about expression… Show the world what you’re working with… I know I want to see (

Now watch me work… ๐Ÿ™‚

All Thrifted Everything…

Do you have a guilty pleasure that makes you ecstatic beyond delight?

I do, and it happens to be thrifting. I absolutely love thrift stores.

This past evening I was talking with a friend of mine, and I mentioned my love of thrifting. He, being the male he is, could not understand why. That my loves, was a mistake. It was nothing for me to explain it to him in a matter of seconds just why being a thrift-a-nista was great… I just used the outfit I was wearing… All of it happened to be thrifted…

You see, I specifically put this outfit together for the purpose of this post. I wanted my entire outfit to be items I purchased on my thrift store adventures. The dress, belt, shoes, purse, and pearls are ALL items I purchased at various thrift stores. You can find me in Salvation Army, Good Will Eastern Seals, Plato’s Closet, Dirt Cheap, or the American Thrift Store at least once a week.

This outfit in particular was a mixture. And that is how I explained it to my friend. Follow the conversation, then check out the photos…

Me: Do I look nice?

Him: Of course… You look great, you always do.

Me: Well all the items I have on came from the thrift store. This dress: Good Will for $2.00; the shoes: Salvation Army for $1.20; the belt: Dirt Cheap for $.25; the purse: Good Will for $2.00, and even the pearls: Dirt Cheap for $1.00 each… The total for my outfit comes to be $7.25. And you said I look great.

Him: Well, well, well… Look at you.

Me: Yep… look at me… Now let’s look at you and price you… (*looks at various labels and begins to giggle)

Him: Naw… that’s oka… I get your point.

IMG_1910 IMG_1907 IMG_1917 IMG_1920 IMG_1922Moral of the story, I looked great in my thrift store finds, and I helped a lost soul to understand the magic of thrifting.

Happy Wednesday my loves… Hope it’s a great as you…

Until next time, kisses and more…

The Sunday’s Blues…

How tough is it for you to chose the perfect fit to wear to church???

Well, for me, it takes a great deal of thought. You see, I have this crazy virtue called modesty, and it always seems to take hold of me during particular moments… Sundays happens to be the days when it grips me the tightest. In a simple definition, modesty is defined as “regard for decency of behavior, speech, dress, etc.; free from vanity and boastfulness”.

I wanted to provide my loves with a definition of this virtue for a reason. I claim that I possess it, why not give you its meaning, and allow you to decide if you can see it in the person I am?

I consider myself to be fashionable; knowledgeable of the latest trends and styles; a fashionista. I believe God gives gifts, and I believe he gave me an eye for fashion. He gave me a love for patterns and colors, and blessed me to able to put items together and produce something great. He gave me the gift to look professional when I am in an interview, and sultry when I want to go “out on the town”. I am not boastful, I do not brag. I just live, and INjoy… and wear amazing shoes.

When I woke up Sunday morning, the sky was gray. When I looked out the window, the day looked awfully gloomy, and although I was happy to have awoken to another day, I was a not in the “happy” mood. So as I look through my closet, searching for the perfect dress to wear, I came across a little blue dress.

This dress is one of my favorites. It is one of those dresses that can be used for almost any occasion. This was only my second time wearing it, and we received many compliments. The color was amazing, the fit was perfect, and with the my Mint Green jewelry and Nude Peep-Toe Pumps (both compliments of Charlotte Russe), we had a great outfit.

With all these curves, I have to be cautious of the outfits I wear to certain places. Being comfortable with my body, and conscience of the places I will be, I have learned how to dress for the perfect occasion. It is okay to be sexy, but sometimes, we should be classy. Today, I was a little of both, but hey, don’t blame me, blame these dangerous curves. But no worry, all was done in modesty

I have always loved Sundays because it gives you a chance to dress up… To put on your best when you go to worship. But in the process of us getting all fancy, let us not forget what Sunday is for. In all that we do, we should worship, praise, and thank God… For it is him who allows our blessings to flow.

Check me out with my Sunday’s Blues…IMG_1886 IMG_1885 IMG_1884

And after… a quick run to Wal-Mart…

Until next time, kisses and more….

Who Run the World??? DELTA Girls!

Ever wonder why you love those Ladies of Delta?

No worry love. This one time, I will help you with the mystery.

Since my blog is so new to the world, I feel obligated to give you a deeper look into the woman I claim to be. A young poet once performed for me, and he called his performance, “Window to My Soul”. That young gentleman took me places with his words. By the time he performed his final poem, I felt like I knew exactly who he was. I guess what I am saying is that I want to be like him. I want Mrs. Clark Gent to serve as the “window to my soul” for those of you who read it. I want you to get to know me, begin to love me, and share my journey with me. Not just about fashion or love… but about life.

So who is Jasmine, J.NeKole, Mrs. Clark Gent, Holly, Jas, etc.???? Well, she is a BLACK COLLEGE WOMAN. I am a proud graduate of Spring Hill College class of 2013. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education – Social Sciences, and I am certified to teach in the State of Alabama. While attending college, I had many amazing opportunities to participate in clubs, sports, and various organizations. The most amazing, becoming a member of the DYNAMIC, the DEVASTATING, the ULTIMATE Illustrious sorority, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Now since I have a degree in education, let me channel my “teaching flow” and help us all to understand something about the women of Delta Sigma Theta. This year, 2013, we are celebrating our Centennial. 100 Years of “Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service”. 100 Years of Excellence. 100 Years of Change. And even while we are celebrating, we are still holding strong to our commitment to serving our community, and even the world. We are COMMITTED TO SERVICE. From voter registration to HIV/AIDS Awareness, Delta women are servants. Don’t believe me??? Check this out…

Education Development

I tried to tell you. Delta women are like no other. Educated and beautiful, and of course fashionable. I was blessed to become a member of the sorority through the Iota Nu City-Wide Chapter which is located in Mobile, AL. The chapter is comprised of beautiful and talented women from the three surrounding school, Spring Hill College, University of Mobile, and the University of South Alabama. Chartered April 23, 1972, the chapter has been giving back to the Mobile community for over 41 years.

Now although I have officially moved on to Alumni status, I am IN made. So allow me to give you a glimpse of me and some of my lovely sisters. We always turn heads… ๐Ÿ™‚

Starting Something New…

Is it not a wonderful feeling to find a true inspiration?

My new baby, MRS. CLARK GENT, was born from inspiration. She was inspired by my partner, my love, my man, DeMarco J. Wills, known better in the blogging world as,ย Clark Gent.

He is the Dooney to my Burke… the Betsy to my Johnson… the Adam to my Eve. Although we are so different, we share many common interest, and the love for fashion happens to be one.
